Earlier today, sixteen inmates escaped from the custodial centre in Keffi, Nasarawa state, after breaching the facility’s security. Umar Abubakar, spokesperson for the correctional service, stated that the inmates overpowered personnel on duty during the breakout.
According to him, two of the personnel are currently receiving treatment in a government hospital, while three others were injured. Meanwhile, the general controller of the correctional service, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered a comprehensive investigation concerning the issue.
The general controller disclosed that any staff found to be an accomplice in the escape would face disciplinary action. Nwakuche also directed a coordinated manhunt for the fleeing inmates through collaboration with other security agencies.
The service reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to public safety and the security of all custodial facilities nationwide. Following this, the state authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual activity to the nearest security post.

Presently, seven of the escaped inmates have been apprehended, while efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining nine. In advance of this, thirteen suspects facing kidnapping and culpable homicide escaped from police custody in Nasarawa State.
The command sources confirmed that the jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025. The high-profile detainees escaped after breaking through the rear wall of their detention cell at the area command facility.
Charges against the suspects range from kidnapping to homicide, attempted kidnapping and other serious charges. The state police are said to be making efforts through the deployment of different tactical and intelligence units to recapture the fugitives.
