NiMet predicts thunderstorms, rainfall from June 14 to 16

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and widespread rainfall across various parts of the country.

The three-day weather outlook which was released on Friday in Abuja was predicted for Saturday, June 14, to Monday, June 16, 2025.

NiMet stated that early morning thunderstorms are expected on Saturday in parts of the northern region, including Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa States.

According to the agency later in the day, more thunderstorms and rainfall are anticipated in Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.

In the North-Central region, early morning thunderstorms are predicted in Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa. These will be followed by additional rainfall in the afternoon and evening in the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau States.

NiMet further added that across the southern states, cloudy morning conditions are expected, with possible rain in Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

As the day progresses, isolated thunderstorms are forecast across Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers State.

On Sunday, morning thunderstorms are expected in Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba, while later in the day, rainfall and thunderstorms will spread to Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi.

North-Central states including Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT are also projected to experience early morning thunderstorms, with increased rainfall in the afternoon.

In the southern belt, morning showers are expected in Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by widespread thunderstorms across the region later in the day.

By Monday, NiMet forecasts morning thunderstorms in northern states like Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba. These will be followed by further storms and rain in Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Gombe, Kaduna, and Bauchi by afternoon.

In the North-Central zone, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected. Thunderstorms are likely in the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and Niger, while afternoon rain is forecast for Kwara, Plateau, and Kogi.

Southern States including Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and Bayelsa will experience morning rain, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the day across most of the South.

NiMet cautioned the public to take necessary safety measures, as strong winds may accompany the thunderstorms and pose hazards.

The agency advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid sheltering under trees, and unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms.

Airline operators were also urged to consult NiMet for up-to-date weather information to ensure safe flight operations.
