A US-based Northern Nigerian group has disbursed ₦10 million in scholarships to over 5,000 science students in Northern Nigeria. Also, the association called Zumunta implements community development projects like school renovations, among others.
The national president of the association, Sunday Bitrus, disclosed that the scholarship programme receives over 10000 applications annually. The national president continued that these applications show strong demand for education, but limited access to education in the region.
Bitrus adds that the group is in collaboration with more than 30 local and international government agencies to run its programs. The association also worked with public health institutions to provide medical services for vulnerable groups, targeting malaria and other diseases.
Bitrus stated that many members hold key roles in Nigerian public service, including the current president, Bola Tinubu. According to him, the notable figures highlight the role of returning Nigerians in national growth.

Zumunta to Host 2025 Convention in Nigeria After 35 Years
The national leader, Sunday Bitrus has announced that the 2025 convention will be held in Nigeria, marking only its second time in 35 years. The convention, starting on July 14–23 in Nasarawa State, will align with National Diaspora Day and Diaspora Week celebrations.
Bitrus noted that the convention aims to promote collaboration between overseas experts and local stakeholders to support the nation’s progress. Founded in 1991 in New York, Zumunta is a diaspora group promoting development across Nigeria’s 19 northern states.
It is established as a non-partisan and non-religious platform under the leadership of Dr. Musa Kallam. Reacting to this, the head of the Nigerians in the diaspora commission commended the association for the country through its initiatives.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa stated that the association’s impact covers the whole federation and not just the northern states. The chairman, therefore, called on other diaspora groups to study and emulate the Zumunta association for more growth and development.
