Ibadan Poly: Makinde defends Olunloyo legacy

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has stated reasons why Ibadan Polytechnic should be renamed after the late scholar, Omololu Olunloyo. In a Facebook video, Makinde noted that Olunloyo, a former state governor, also served as rector of Ibadan Poly.

According to him, the name modification will expand the university’s scope and also enhance the quality of education offered there. He adds that the name change will honour the founding principle of the institution.

Makinde said those opposing the proposed name change should provide stronger reasons why the Ibadan Poly should not be renamed. He further emphasized that the life and personality of the late former governor go beyond a one-line explanation.

The video follows the student, alumni and notable personalities’ reactions regarding the governor’s decision to rename the institution. Earlier this month, commuters and staff of the institution were stranded as students of the polytechnic protested, advising the governor to retract his decision.

SUG president of the school, Olamide Oladipupo, characterized the decision as unjustifiable and degrading to the school. According to him, the name “Polytechnic Ibadan” is synonymous with quality education, gaining national respect and recognition.

Oladipupo emphasizes that the name change would invalidate the legacy of the institution, damaging the reputation of its alumni. In his statement, the student union will initiate discussions and alternative solutions that benefit the institution.

Name change meaningless without real impact on school’s development — Bamigboye

Meanwhile, the campaign for democratic and workers’ rights (CWDR) described the actions as mere symbolism. According to State Coordinator Abiodun Bamigboye, the modification is meaningless if it does not significantly improve the institution’s overall development.

Victor Oluwole Olunloyo was the first Ibadan indigene to serve as the governor of old Oyo State. He died on April 6, 2025, and served as governor between October 1 and December 31, 1983.
