Prominent world leaders, state governors, and key arms of government have continued to pay glowing tributes to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 81.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, described Buhari’s death as a profound loss to the nation. The statement, signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubike, emphasized Buhari’s unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s development and national progress.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family, government, and people of Nigeria,” Badaru stated.

Also mourning the former leader, Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Buhari, describing him as “a revered leader who served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and discipline.”

The statement was made available to journalists by the Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Gumel, in Dutse. Namadi also extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the government and people of Katsina State, and the nation at large.

To honour the late president, the Katsina State Government declared Monday, July 14, 2025, as a work-free day. Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari, announced the decision in a statement, noting that it would give residents time to mourn their illustrious son.

Legislative arm

Meanwhile, the National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities in respect of the former president. The announcement was made by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, who said plenary sessions will resume on Tuesday, July 22. He noted that the suspension was a mark of honour for Buhari’s contributions to the growth of democracy and national unity.

On the global front

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s demise. In a condolence message shared on his official X handle on Monday, Modi described Buhari as a “statesman whose legacy of diplomacy and commitment to bilateral cooperation will be remembered.”

“Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth and unwavering commitment to India–Nigeria friendship stood out,” Modi said.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, is being remembered across the world for his disciplined leadership style and anti-corruption stance.
