The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to security agencies and the state government following the discovery of yet another student murdered under disturbing circumstances.
The latest incident involves a female student allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend, who is said to be an indigene of the host community. According to reports, the victim’s decomposing body was discovered in her boyfriend’s apartment after neighbours perceived a foul odour and forcefully gained entry into the room.
The alleged perpetrator is currently on the run, although his mother has been reportedly arrested by the police as investigations continue.
This tragic development comes barely weeks after the university community was shaken by the gruesome killing of two other students, who were reportedly kidnapped and later found dead.
The SUG noted that preliminary investigations in the earlier incident pointed fingers at some members of the host community as suspects.
In a press statement signed on Saturday by the SUG President, Salami Akeem (Ologbon), the union expressed deep dissatisfaction over what it described as “incessant and targeted attacks” on students of the institution.
Akeem lamented that despite collaborative efforts with the police and key stakeholders in Akungba to prevent a recurrence, another student has been killed.
“We were rudely confronted with another terrible news of another student that was murdered by her boyfriend who also happened to be an indigene of the host community,” the statement read in part.
The union demanded swift and decisive action from the Ondo State Government, the Nigerian Police Force, and other relevant bodies, stressing that justice must be served for the lives lost.
“We are issuing a 24-hour ultimatum… to come to the aid and stop the gruesome and incessant killings of the student community in Akungba,” the statement added.
The union also warned that failure to apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice would leave the students with no option but to embark on a mass protest to demand accountability and security.
The letter was also copied to the Ondo State Government, the Inspector General of Police, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, the Nigerian Police Force, and the Nigerian Bar Association.
