Following the tragic death of a 50-year-old farmer, Musa Kalamu, who was killed by a herd of elephants in the Itasin community of the Ogbere area, the member representing Ijebu East in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Waliu Ifedolapo, has called for immediate government action while appealing for calm among residents.
Afrocover earlier reported that Kalamu died on Monday after six elephants reportedly attacked him on his farm an incident that has sparked outrage in the community, which has a history of human-animal conflicts.
Reacting to the development in a statement on Tuesday, Ifedolapo described the incident as deeply unfortunate and shocking, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased.
“While we understand the pain and confusion this incident has caused, we urge our people to remain calm. The government is being engaged to take swift and lasting action,” he said.
Acknowledging the fear and anger the rare but deadly incident has generated, Ifedolapo urged the Ogun State Government and relevant wildlife and environmental agencies to investigate the cause of the attack and implement effective preventive measures to avoid future occurrences.
The lawmaker further advocated for the immediate implementation of a conservationist development plan in the area to manage human-wildlife boundaries and ensure the safety of lives and property, while preserving ecological balance.
“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between conservation agencies, local authorities, and the state government.
“Our communities should not live in fear of wildlife attacks. We must strike a balance between conservation and safety,” he added.
Ifedolapo reaffirmed his commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure effective solutions are deployed and that such an incident never repeats itself.
The lawmaker also assured constituents that the matter would be raised on the floor of the House to seek a lasting resolution.
