A renewed wave of violence in Akwa Ibom has left many hospitalised, including those displaced, due to burned properties. Reports say that the people of Eket LGA allegedly invaded Ibeno LGA over control of the Stubbs creeks reserve.

The two neighboring areas have conflict, resulting in multiple deaths and the destruction of properties for years. The latest attack, which happened on Friday at about 1:30 am, has left several members of the Ibeno community group wounded.

An anonymous eyewitness revealed that a popular figure in the area, Daniel Asuquo, was wounded while trying to escape. The eyewitness recalled that Asuquo’s residence, along with other people’s properties, were set ablaze during the invasion.

He continued that police were alerted immediately when a gunshot was heard in the community to mobilize and rescue. Fortunately, Asuquo, known as “Danbaba,” was taken to a nearby health facility after he was seen lying in a pool of blood.

Another victim of the attack stated that the recent violence threatens the peace and stability of the community residents.

According to report, the attack is the fifth time the Ibeno community has been attacked by the Eket LGA recently. Ibeno local government area is home to major oil installations and multinational installations in the state.

It has reportedly been attacked due to remapping and boundary re-adjustment initiated by the former governor of the state, Udom Emmanuel. In response, the commissioner of police, Baba Azare, has assured that investigations are ongoing to bring the culprits to justice. He reiterated that no stone would be left unturned in arresting the perpetrators of the crime.
