The Imo state police community relations committee (PCRC) has removed itself from a planned protest against violence in the state. The chairman committee, Bertram Uzodimma, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Owerri on Monday.

According to him, the protest is slated to start on August 7, 2025, convened by concerned citizen Wisdom Anyanwu. He continued that the committee had met with security agencies, assuring that threats would be addressed decisively in the state.

He urged the state residents to tread with caution, describing the protest as something that shouldn’t be honoured by the residents. The committee also encouraged the convener to call off the protest and allow set mechanisms to address the issue.

He revealed that the protest can easily be hijacked as the organizers fail to establish adequate contacts with appropriate authorities. However, he underscores PCRC’s commitment to maintaining cordial relationships between the police and the Nigerian public.

Prior to this, two policemen in the Ebonyi state house of assembly were killed by unidentified gunmen in Imo state. According to sources, the incident occurred while the officers were traveling with the state lawmaker and his entourage on Sunday.

The officers were attacked and killed following the delay from one of their vehicles, which developed a mechanical fault. The area in which they were killed, the Okigwe area, is known as a high-risk zone for violence in the state.

In response, tactical teams have been deployed to the area, surrounding bushes in a manhunt for the perpetrators of the incident. Reports indicate that imo has over 650 fatalities from criminal violence between January 2020 and May 2024.
