The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that its recent sting operation, which led to the arrest of 93 suspected internet fraudsters, did not target the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Reacting to claims by the OOPL management that the night raid was a calculated attack on ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and a blatant violation of rights, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stressed that the operation was focused solely on the suspects, not the former president’s facility.
“The former president’s facility was not a target of EFCC’s operations. The suspects were the target and have confessed to involvement in internet crimes,” he stated.
The OOPL management had condemned the arrest of guests at its guest house, demanding N3.5 billion in compensation and a public apology within seven days or face legal action.

Explaining the operation, Oyewale said the arrests took place at a hotel located within the OOPL precincts after intelligence revealed that the suspects were holding a pool party to celebrate alleged illicit activities.
“The party was initially planned to hold in two locations but was shifted to the hotel in OOPL ostensibly to escape possible arrest. The planners got wind of the Commission’s intelligence and scampered to the OOPL expecting a sort of cover from arrest,” he explained.
According to him, profiling of the suspects linked almost all of them to offences including impersonation, identity theft, and internet fraud.
“Sequel to the arrest of 93 suspected internet fraudsters at a hotel within the precincts of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the EFCC will, on Friday, August 15, 2025, arraign 23 of the suspects before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos,” he added, noting that the arraignment will be conducted in batches.
