In 2011, a 17-year-old girl from Ondo State gained national attention when she emerged as the overall best student in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), recording nine distinctions.
Fourteen years later, that same young lady, Dr. Tolulope Janet Falokun, has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Detroit Mercy, United States.
Falokun, who was celebrated across Nigeria for her stellar academic feat, has continued to blaze the trail in the legal and academic world.
According to her official profile on the University’s website, she joined the institution’s Riverfront Campus in 2024 after building a career in business, commercial, and technology law.
Her academic journey began at St. Louis Secondary School, Ondo, where she topped the 2011 WAEC rankings.
Speaking after her result was announced at the time, she attributed her success to “the grace of God, personal sacrifice, and hard work,” adding that she often denied herself social outings to focus on her studies.
Back then, her achievement was described as a source of hope for public schools, while the Ondo State Government under Dr. Olusegun Mimiko awarded her a scholarship to study Law at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
Falokun went on to graduate at the top of her class in 2017 before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School, where she finished in the top one per cent with First Class Honours.
Her brilliance earned her a place at Harvard Law School for a Master of Laws (LL.M.), after which she gained professional experience in both Nigeria and the United States.
She worked as a Corporate, Commercial, and Technology Law Associate at Templars Law, a Research Associate at a Manhattan law firm, a Tech Law Intern with a South Carolina non-profit, and a Researcher at Harvard University. She also rendered pro bono service with the Justice Development and Peace Commission.

Today, as an Assistant Professor of Law, Falokun teaches and researches in areas spanning corporate, commercial, and technology law. She also holds an Introductory Certificate in Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London.
Her story is not only a testament to intellectual excellence but also to perseverance and the power of early sacrifices. What began with burning midnight candles in a boarding school dormitory in Ondo has now blossomed into a career shaping future legal minds in the United States.
Back in 2011, her father, Mr. Samuel Adelaja Falokun, proudly told journalists that he enrolled his daughter in a Catholic school because of its discipline and high standards. Her mother, Mrs. Dolapo Falokun, also predicted her daughter’s rise, saying Tolu had always been studious from childhood.
From topping the national charts in secondary school to standing before law students in an American classroom, Tolulope Falokun’s journey remains a remarkable example of how diligence, faith, and opportunity can transform dreams into reality.
