A road accident has claimed the life of a 100-level student of Yobe State University, Damaturu, Amina Yakubu, near the institution’s gate.

The spokesperson of the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with The Punch correspondent.

He said, “There was an incident like that. Amina and a few other students got injured. Eventually, Amina lost her life. She was one of the passengers. They were all on board the tricycle.”

Abdulkarim added that while Amina died, four others sustained slight injuries but had since received treatment at a hospital.

“The only message is that I condole with the family in the first instance,” he said.

Abdulkarim further explained that the crash was linked to diversions on Gujba Road caused by military operations in the area.

He noted that motorists are often forced into a single lane, adding that due to impatience and other factors, accidents had been occurring from time to time along that stretch.

The spokesperson said that the diversion often forces motorists into a single lane, and impatience by road users sometimes leads to accidents.

He, however, used the opportunity to call for safer road practices in the state.

“This should be a wake-up call for the entire community that reckless and dangerous driving is claiming more lives every day. My advice is that we need government presence to check the causes of these incidents.

“Commercial riders should also consider the lives of others and their own first, before anything else. I will also suggest training for most Keke NAPEP riders on how to use their tricycles and other means of transport for commercial purposes.

Amina has reportedly been laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
