The Federal Government has cautioned nine states and 15 northern communities, following a possible flooding from August 25–29, 2025. The alert was issued on Monday and signed by Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department Director, Usman Abdullahi Bokani
Bokani called on relevant stakeholders on the centre’s platform to give feedback on any emerging situation in their various states. He also revealed that Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, as well as Kano and Katsina States, have been placed on red alert.
As outlined in the advisory, Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara are projected to experience flooding. Before this, the department predicted possible flooding in seven states and 25 locations across Nigeria.
Other states that could witness flooding within the period of prediction were Sokoto and Zamfara, with some areas on red alert. Adamawa and Katsina States reportedly carry the highest number of towns listed on the flood alert.

Notable among them were Adamawa’s Mubi town, Shelleng and Abba-Kumbo, while Katsina State has Katsina town, Kaita and Bindawa. The ministry, in its flood alert, warned that heavy rainfall expected between August 23 and 24 could lead to flooding in the listed areas.
Following this, the ministry directed residents of the affected communities to evacuate immediately from the areas listed. In a related development, Yobe State recently experienced flooding that displaced 612 residents and affected 102 households in the Potiskum area.
