Nnamdi Kanu fails to secure permit for medical treatment

Federal high court justice, Musa Liman, has reassigned Kanu’s motion seeking an order to be transferred for medical attention. This follows an application by Kanu’s counsel, because the court’s annual vacation would end on September 15.

In the motion, Kanu’s counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN, sought leave for the application dated September 3, 2025, to be heard before the judge. Agabi also prayed that the court consider it urgently due to the deteriorating health of Kanu.

He told the court that the IPOB leader had earlier, on May 19, applied for bail pending the hearing  of the terrorism case against him. He noted that the bail application could not be heard before the court’s vacation, leading to Kanu’s continued detention.

The counsel also alleged that a letter from the doctors to the DSS Director-General, advising Kanu’s transfer, was ignored. According to Agabi, Kanu’s health has since escalated unfavourably, prompting medical examinations to prevent further decline.

Justice Liman had previously granted the request to have the motion heard during the Court’s vacation. Liman also ordered the service of the processes and hearing notice on DSS to enable them to respond.

However, on Monday, the trial judge said there was insufficient time left for the vacation court to determine the matter. He emphasized that the registrar had listed no fewer than 30 cases for the day’s proceedings, which were shortened to six.

While noting that Kanu’s motion was urgent, the federal judge remarked that it had been filed late. Kanu has issues affecting his pancreas and liver, including an emerging lump under his armpit and dangerously low potassium levels.
