The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has vowed to sustain its crackdown on proliferating institutions parading as polytechnics. This follows the board’s announcement of a landmark collaboration with a United States-based research and training body.

The collaboration is meant to introduce Applied Interdisciplinary Engineering and Technology Research into Nigerian polytechnics. According to the board, the partnership would bring fresh initiatives to transform the sector into a hub of innovation.

The board Executive Secretary, Idris Bugaje, announced the  collaboration, adding that the initiative focused on  open-source technologies. He said the board had already trained lecturers nationwide and would culminate in its first international seminar in Abuja in November.

According to Bugaje, the reform would enable polytechnic  graduates to become job creators rather than job seekers.  NBTE director, Fatimah Umar, vowed that the agency would continue its fight against institutions undermining government effort in education sector.

Fatimah, during an accreditation visit to Ogun state college of science, pledged that unaccredited institutions will be sanctioned.  Following this, she urged the lecturers in the institution to engage in personal development and register with appropriate professional bodies.

Similarly, the director commended the management of the institution for its efforts to provide qualitative tertiary education for Nigerians.

In response, the provost of the college  Oluwatosin Adebayo, reiterated the management’s commitment in sustaining the institution growth. He revealed that the NBTE visited for resource inspection and accreditation of about eight courses, including film and multimedia production.

The training programme, is said to have been a direct response to the global rise of AI in education and industry
