There are emerging signs that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU might relax some of its demands. After entering negotiation with the Prof Nimi Briggs committee, there has been significant progress towards calling off the strike.
Meanwhile, it’s unlikely for the Union to go back-out from some of its financial demands from the Federal Government. Nevertheless, there are high hopes in the camp of the committee that the Union might give the FG time to implement some of its requests.
Confirming the development, the National President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke attested to the development. He established that meetings are ongoing and they’ve brought in positive development. Additionally, Prof Osodeke stressed that the deadline given to the negotiation team won’t affect ASUU’s decision. He concluded that the Union is open to negotiation with obligations to make any outcome public.
In addition, Members of ASUU have also bemoaned the prolonged negotiation with the Federal Government. They cited that their families are also part of the students that have been away from school due to the strike. The Union heaped blame on the Federal Government for failing to set things right in the educational sector.
Recall that the Federal Government constituted the Prof Nimi Briggs committee to negotiate with ASUU. The deadline for the negotiation will elapse this week, the imminent time-out has birthed numerous meetings between the two parties. Positively, the meeting has resulted in a positive turnout as ASUU is now willing to shift ground.
