In September 2021, Sun Shujun, manager of a mine was arrested for torturing his workers. This arrest came after a viral video of him on the social media, beating a guy who was tied to a post.

Judge Jacques Kanyarukiga sentenced Sun and an accomplice to 20 years in prison, stating that it was “obvious that (Sun) tortured the victims and administered physical punishment with malicious purpose, and this is a terrible offense.”

Sun, who attended the verdict hearing in court, admitted to beating two workers and claimed he did so because he was “frustrated and tired of them regularly taking minerals.”

43-year-old man had claimed that he had made amends for the two by paying them a total of more than one million Rwandan francs ($1,000) and signing a “reconciliation letter,” arguing for his release.

However, the prosecution maintained that the victims had accepted the payments “because they were traumatized and terrified of him” despite the fact that they had been accused of attacking four individuals.

In the viral video, the Chinese man is seen flopping a man bound to a pole while a few people in orange jackets watched was extensively circulated. The primary ore of tin, cassiterite, is produced by the mine.
