Fear enveloped Abeokuta environs over the rumor of an alleged invasion of the city by Boko Haram insurgents.
The rumor which circulated at 12:30 had parents withdrawing their wards from schools located in the Fulani community in Roundabou-Soyo’ye area and also Obada Oko/Oke-Ata area.
Newsmen learned wards withdrawal from school was a reaction to a rumor that an unknown number of Boko haram gunmen struck one of the schools in roundabout area, where an unidentified number of students were killed.
The rumor spread around the state which led parents, community leaders, and other architects of the state to rise in search of the alleged intruders.
Chairman of Miyetti Allah in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim Dendi, dispelled the rumor. According to him, the false notifications were the handiwork of hooligans who seek to cause commotion in the state and loot traders’ wares.
Ogun State Police Public Relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi also dismissed the rumor. He states the command situation report SITREP, revealed that there is relative peace within Abeokuta city and within the state generally.
The commissioner police deployed some officers to the alleged scene of the incident only to find out nothing of such took place there.
The Police PRO has warned peddlers of false rumors and alarms to desist from it, as such acts will no longer be condoned.
