State Governors from the All Progressives Party (APC) are expected to meet members of the National Assembly that didn’t secure the party’s ticket to contest in the 2023 general elections. According to reports, some APC Governors sponsored some candidates against serving senators and some members of the House of Representatives.
Thus, preventing their return to the legislature by 2023, some of the affected reps are from Benue, Kebbi, Zamfara, Delta, Ekiti, and Ogun. This resulted in a massive defection to opposing parties in these states. In reaction, the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, on Wednesday met with the affected lawmakers after rumors of their defection came to his notice.
Currently, over 13 senators from APC have dumped the ruling party for the opposition parties. The aggrieved members who left the party argued that they have no choice but to join the opposition in other pursue their ambitions.
Additionally, the Reps and Senators accused their State Governors of sponsoring members of their cabinet members against them, A decision that didn’t sit well with them. With the intervention of the National Chairman, the lawmakers are hopeful of a swift resolution. In a recent interview, Senator Abdullahi Adamu bemoaned the reported defection. He illustrated how it could deal a huge blow to the chances of the party at the upcoming general election in 2023.
Subsequently, the national chairman is consulting stakeholders in the party to reach level ground. However, INEC stipulations on the conduct of Primary elections are likely to be a stumbling block in the resolution process.
