The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has extended the ongoing continuous voter registration indefinitely following an order issued by a Federal High Court. The exercise was earlier scheduled to end on the 30th.
This development was made known through a statement issued on Friday by Festus Okoye, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee. According to Fetus, all electoral officers and resident electoral commission are authorized to proceed with the registration exercise.
A Federal High court in Abuja had granted an interim order stopping INEC from discontinuing voters registration on June 30, 2022. The court has adjourned the hearing of the substantive matter to July 4th. According to Festus, INEC will give an update after July 4th.
In addition, the Electoral Commission has also deployed more devices to regions with high demands. Speaking on the validity of the July 15 deadline allotted to political parties for submission of gubernatorial and state assembly primaries list, Festus stated July 15 remains valid.
