Popular Ghanaian chef, Falilat Abdul-Rasak, popularly known as Falila has dethroned Irish chef Alan Fisher as the new Guinness World Record holder for the longest cooking marathon. The 26-year-old achieved this landmark feat after cooking for 227 hours. Falila began cooking on January 1, 2024, and went on for a nine-day cooking streak, preparing more than 100 varieties of foods.
More so, Falila became the first African to successfully attempt the cooking marathon after popular Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci. Recall that in June 2023, Hilda Baci made major headlines across Africa and the rest of the world for setting a cooking marathon record of 93 hours and 11 minutes. Initially, Baci cooked for a total of 100 minutes during her four-day marathon.
However, the Guinness World Record team confirmed only 93 hours and 11 minutes citing that the Nigerian chef took more time to rest while attempting the record. Then, Baci’s record upon confirmation from the Guinness World Record Team made prominent Indian chef, Tata Landon the previous holder. Chef Tata Landon previously held the record after cooking for 87 hours non-stop in 2019.
How Falila Became a New Record Holder After Many Failed Attempts By Africans
On the flip side, Hilda Baci’s record only lasted for a few months before Irish Chef, Alan Fisher cooked for 119 hours and 57 minutes. It is worth mentioning that after Hilda Baci attempted the world record last June, applications for entries to the Guinness World Record book by Africans skyrocketed massively. Various individuals from African countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon among many others launched different attempts to set new records.
The Guinness World Record craze in Africa saw attempts to set and break numerous records. Some of these attempts include a challenge from another Nigerian, Chef Dammy, to set a cooking marathon record shortly after news about Hilda Baci broke on the internet. Consequently, various attempts by African Chefs followed but they were futile as they all failed to dislodge the record.
Now, Falila is set to become the latest African to set a new cooking marathon record. At the moment, the Ghanaian awaits the confirmation of the Guinness World Record team to claim this record. During an interview, Falila revealed that her attempt was a national assignment.
In her submission, the chef stated that she went on the cooking marathon to bring more glory to her country and Africa at large. More so, at the end of her cooking exercise, fans and well-wishers wrapped the chef in her country’s colors to indicate their support.
