A new increase in electricity tariff has been approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC. As revealed, the commission approved N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour, a 300 percent increase from the previous N68.00.

In an announcement by NERC Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, he revealed that the increase is urban consumers, also known as Band A consumers in the country.

In addition, power distribution companies, DisCos, are allowed to raise electricity tariff to N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour from April 1.

The vice chairman further clarified that the tariff increase will only affect 15 percent of the electricity customers who consume 40 percent of the nation’s electricity.

Worth noting that Band A members are those that have minimum of 20 hours of light daily.
