The House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has summoned the management of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) on Tuesday for allegedly maltreating Mr Adebola Daniel. According to report, Mr Adebola Daniel is a person living with disability and the son of erstwhile Ogun State governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel.

Recall that in a series of posts on X last Friday, Mr Adebola Daniel decried the alleged discrimination against him at a KFC outlet in Murtala Muhammed Airport. According to Mr Adebola Daniel, the manager of the outlet yelled at him “No wheelchair allowed.” His disclosure on X (formerly Twitter) generated a lot of backlash against KFC which compelled the management of the airport to shut down the outlet.

KFC to Face Stern Questioning in Coming Days

The controversies surrounding the revelation of the restaurant made the House Committee on Disabilities invite the management of the restaurant. More so, the chairman of the committee, Bashiru Ayinla while addressing the press on Tuesday revealed that the restaurant is now facing questions from the delegation.

Furthermore, the chairman assured that the interrogation would be based on house rules. He added that the discriminatory incident of Mr Daniel illuminates the challenges individuals with disabilities are facing in Nigeria. Hon. Bashiru Ayinla submitted that the treatment is totally unacceptable and is against the principles of inclusivity and respect.

Additionally, he ruled that the incident was a violation of the Disability Act. The chairman stated that the discriminatory stance of KFC on people living with disabilities undermines the efforts to fully implement the Disability Act.

Consequently, the lawmaker established that the case of Mr Adebola Daniel is one of millions of other unreported cases of discrimination against people with disabilities. He revealed that any form of discrimination against people with disabilities will no longer be tolerated at every level of government.

Similarly, the National Commission For Persons With Disabilities has also weighed in on the issue. In a statement by the Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr James Lalu, a panel will be set on Thursday to query the management of KFC over the issue.
