The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an immediate rebrand of the Labour Party (LP), amidst the party crisis. The directive emanated from a communique issued by NLC’s president, Joe Ajaero after its National Executive Council meeting held in Yola, the Adamawa state capital.
In the release, the NLC acknowledged that the LP is a creation of the NLC currently facing an internal power conflict, stressing the need for an urgent intervention.
Recall that following the leadership dispute that rocked the LP, the National Executive Committee of the party resolved to remove Julius Abure as the National Chairman in 2024.
However, in January 2025, the Court of Appeal affirmed an earlier judgment of an Abuja Federal High Court, recognizing Julius Abure as the chairman of the party.
Despite the Court of Appeal’s judgment, the NLC failed to recognize the leadership of the party under Abure as the National Chairman of the LP.
The Congress maintained in its release that it would not allow the LP to be hijacked by “reactionary forces” who do not represent the aspirations of Nigerians. NLC therefore directed its organ, the National Administrative Council (NAC) to take immediate steps to rebrand the party for the LP.
By that, the NLC aims to set the path of the party to its original ideological roots. Additionally, the NLC charged NAC to merge or form a coalition with like-minded parties to defend the interests of Nigerians and Nigerian workers in the party.
The NLC further emphasized its commitment to ensuring that the LP remains a true vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and the oppressed masses.
