Impeached Lagos House of Assembly speaker, Mudashiru Obasa has been returned as the Speaker of the house nearly 2 months after his removal.
Obasa was reinstated at the house plenary session on Monday following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda who has assumed the role.
The leadership crisis in the Assembly erupted on January 13, 2025, when over two-thirds of the 40-member House voted to remove Obasa over multiple allegations such as corruptions, and bad leadership display, Obasa however rejected the removal, claiming it does not follow the due constitutional procedure.
Responding to the removal, Obasa had earlier said “My status in the House? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it.”
While speaking at the plenary, Obasa appreciated the lawmaker, and described the house as house of integrity, capable of resolving issues in the interest of the institution and party, he also thanked his colleagues for their good works.
“What is happening here today shows that the Lagos State House of Assembly is capable and is a House of integrity. It is a house that has an internal mechanism to resolve issues in the interest of the institution and our party.”
“Today is not the day for speech making but to celebrate my colleagues and thank them for all they have been doing. I am sure we will continue to work together in peace, love and harmony.” He said.
Obasa also assured the people of Lagos that the conflict has been resolved and will work to serve and protect their interest.
He said, “We want to assure Lagosians that we have resolved and determined to serve their interest and protect their interest always.
“Our major responsibility is to represent them and; that’s what we have been doing.
The reinstatement was made possible, after high-level negotiations with stakeholders and leaders of the party, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The plenary also saw other key leadership changes within the House. Meranda was re-elected as the deputy speaker, Mojeed Fatai of Ibeju-Lekki Constituency I was re-elected as Chief Whip. Setonji David of Badagry Constituency II re-elected as Deputy Chief Whip.
