The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has arrested six individuals for allegedly selling sachet alcohol and aphrodisiacs in Lagos traffic.
The suspects were apprehended around the Iyana-Isolo-Ilasamaja axis of the state yesterday.
The Corps Marshal of LAGESC, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole, disclosed this development at the agency’s headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi. He explained that the arrests were made following multiple complaints from motorists about vendors selling alcohol and sexual stimulants in traffic.
“We received reports from drivers and commuters about the illegal sale of sachet alcohol, liquor, and aphrodisiacs in traffic. This practice contributes to road accidents caused by drunk driving and disorderly behavior among passengers,” Cole stated.
The suspects, identified as Kemi Akeju (36), Bola Oladimeji (49), Monsurat Bakare (40), Tosin Olayiwola (38), Lateefat Bakare (45), and Stella Joseph (41), according to Cole, have since been charged to court.
Cole raised concerns over the growing cases of drunk driving in Lagos, describing it as a major cause of road accidents. He warned that the agency will intensify efforts to clamp down on those selling alcoholic beverages and stimulants in traffic.
“Drunk driving is a significant contributor to road crashes. We will ensure that this dangerous trend of alcohol sales in traffic is completely eradicated,” he warned.
In addition, the KAI boss issued a warning to street traders and hawkers whose activities obstruct traffic. He also cautioned building contractors against dumping construction materials like sand and gravel on roads, emphasizing the safety risks they pose.
“We are warning street traders and hawkers to stop obstructing traffic, as their activities disrupt road safety. Building contractors must also desist from leaving construction materials like sand and gravel on the roads, as they pose serious hazards,” the Corps Marshal cautioned.
Furthermore, Cole urged both public and private property owners to maintain proper waste disposal practices by engaging registered PSP operators for waste collection. He stressed that maintaining a clean and organized environment is essential for a healthier and more habitable Lagos.
