The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, through its Executive Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede has called on student union leaders in universities and other institutions of higher learning in Nigeria to stand against internet fraud and collaborate with the Commission in tackling the menace on campuses.

This was disclosed on Monday, 24 March 2025 in the Commission’s press release on X.

According to EFCC, Olukoyede made this call in Benin City, Edo State on Thursday, March 20, 2025, during an interactive session with executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Joint Campus Council, Edo Axis and National Association of University Students, NAUS, Edo State who paid a courtesy visit to the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC.

Speaking through the Acting Zonal Director, Benin Zonal Directorate, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Effa Imoh Okim, the EFCC Chairman stated that the fight against internet fraud and other forms of fraud was to safeguard the future of the hardworking Nigerian youths.

“What we are doing here is in your best interest. We do not want your future to be destroyed by some bad elements. Internet fraud destroys our image as a country and frustrates investment. So we want you to partner with us in taking this message to students in your schools to embrace the right values of hard work, integrity and discipline and shun the lure of quick wealth. There is no shortcut to wealth. Every attempt to take the shortcut often leads to regret and gnashing of teeth. And we do not want that for you”, he said.

While urging the student executives to be at the forefront of promoting good values among students, he said, “Your future is very bright as long as you are hardworking, disciplined and engage in legitimate activities.”

In his response, the President NAUS, Ogana Praise Chukwumdinma commended the Commission on its efforts to rid the nation of economic and financial crimes.

He noted that based on the rising concerns of cybercrime among students, his Association was willing to partner with the Commission to develop proactive measures to checkmate the menace.

Meanwhile, the president of NANS, Ojumoola Miracle Timileyin, promised to collaborate with the Commission in creating awareness of the ranger of internet fraud among the youth.

“We believe that through partnership, we can promote ethical behaviour among students and foster a culture of integrity,” he said.
