The United Kingdom has pledged to continue fostering a good relationship with Nigeria, regardless of new immigration reforms. The British High Commission in Nigeria gave this assurance in a statement issued on Monday.

This is shortly after the release of the United Kingdom Immigration White Paper earlier on that Monday. A spokesperson for the Commission clarified that the White Paper published recently details proposed changes to the UK’s legal migration framework.

According to the spokesperson, while the restructuring aims to restore order, control and fairness, it would also reduce net migration and support economic growth. Moreover, the UK cherishes its strong, long-standing ties with Nigeria, indicating the UK as a popular choice among Nigerians choosing destinations to visit, study, work, and live.

Also, the High Commission noted that the implementation of these reforms will be gradual, adding that upon the availability of further details, the UK government hopes to confer with relevant partners in Nigeria’s federal government.

Furthermore, the Commission underscored the commitment of the UK government to its tradition as an outward-looking nation. This includes investing and trading abroad, welcoming the creativity, diversity and ideas of people who have come to the United Kingdom.
