Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, sets to become an accredited university as the bill passes second reading.

The Bill sponsored by Senator Michael Bamidele representing APC, Ekiti Central, is titled “A Bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment of the Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos State, and to make comprehensive provisions for its due management and administration and for other related matters, 2025.”

Earlier in February, the Minister for Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed during a work visit to the college that the federal government has approved its upgrade to a university.

Alausa noted that this decision is in line with the current administration’s aims to improve the educational sector. Further, the institution is ready to undergo the necessary changes that would come with the conversion.

Additionally, he clarified that upgrading to ‘Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies’ would not deter the institution from achieving its goals. The minister explained that the institution is prepared to remain committed to its goals of producing quality graduates who can drive national transformation.

During the first reading, all senators supported the Bill, and its second reading after the presiding Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, put it to a vote.

Senate approves new Police University   in Ogun

Meanwhile, following the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, the Senate has passed a Bill to establish a University in Ogun State.

According to the Committee Chairman, Abdulhamid Mallam-Madori, the proposed ‘Nigeria Police University of Science and Technology’ would strengthen the security sector. He explained that the institution would provide technical education in fields that assist security research and innovation.

Furthermore, Mallam-Madori noted that the university would also create employment opportunities, and improve infrastructure within Erinja, Yewa in Ogun State. In addition to this, the stimulation of economic activities and promotion of community engagement will foster local economic growth.
