The Abuja Federal High Court on Monday issued an order interim restraining INEC from going ahead with its plan to bring an end to voter registration on June 30.
The Judge, Mobolaji Olajuwon gave the order following an application for an interim injunction by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project(SERAP) and other 185 concerned Nigerians.
The applicants persuaded the court to extend voters registration to avoid disenfranchisement of many Nigerians who are yet to be registered.
The applicant urged the court to declare INEC’s refusal to extend voter registration unconstitutional, illegal, and incompatible with international standards.
The suit number FHC/L/CS/1034/2022 is adorned till June 29, 2022, for a hearing of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.
Following the provision of section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022, registration of voters, updating, and revision of voters register shall not stop not later than 90days before any election covered by the Act.
