A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N100 million in general damages against Louisville Girls’ Secondary School, Gwagwalada. The sum is awarded due to the carelessness of the school which caused the death of a boarding student, Kamzie.
Also, the Judge, Sylvanus Oriji ordered a 10% interest on the awarded sum from April 8 until full payment is made. He also awarded a sum of 300,000 naira as the cost of the suit filed by the father of the victim. The judge in his verdict noted that Kamzie died due to the school’s negligence to attend to her medical needs.
Kamzie who was admitted as a boarding student in September 2017 got sick on October 2 2017, and died a few days later. The 9-year-old fell ill shortly after her admission and resumption into the catholic secondary school in Abuja.
Her father, Ifeanyi Ikpeatuism sued the school for negligence and carelessness that resulted in the death of her daughter. Ikpeatuism claimed that the school’s failure to provide adequate medical attention after Kamzie fell ill led to her untimely death.
He therefore asked that one of the school buildings be renamed after his daughter, saying money can’t bring her back. However, Oriji acknowledged that the improvement of the school sickbay following the incident is a significant outcome of the case.
According to him, doctors in the school have started attending to students twice daily to avoid the incident repeating itself. He noted that this development is sufficient enough to know the school is making amends for its mistake.
Oriji added that the medical sector improvement is in honor of Kamzie, as part of reforms recommended by her family. He therefore urged the claimant to take solace in the fact that Kamzie has been honored by these developments.
