The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested businesswoman Aisha Achimugu at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, today. According to report, Achimugu, who had been declared wanted in March, was arrested shortly after her return from London around 5 am.
Further report says that the businesswoman was declared wanted by EFCC over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, had instructed Achimugu to appear before EFCC today and also appear before the court tomorrow.
Reacting to this, her lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, criticized the commission’s action, describing it as a violation of a court order. Ojukwu added that his client had commenced a hunger strike to protest the breach of her fundamental rights.
Also, an undisclosed authoritative source in the commission has disclosed two major reasons for arresting the businesswoman. The source expressed that she can’t be allowed to walk freely even after being declared wanted by the commission.
The source added that the commission is not restricted from arresting her, as the court only instructed that she should not be detained. On the flip side, EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale is yet to respond to calls and messages concerning the arrest of Achimugu.
