APC leader says Nigeria must abandon presidential system to grow

All Progressive Congress (APC) leader in Rivers state, Tonye Cole has called for the abolition of the presidential system of government in Nigeria. The 2023 Rivers state governorship candidate of the APC made this revelation on Friday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Cole emphasized that the current system isn’t suitable for the country. Consequently, the APC chieftain urged for the embracement of a better system that would suit Nigerians better.

More so, he stressed that the current structure only favors few people, and it gives them the opportunity to carry out corrupt practices without proper checkmate. Cole added that the system failed to establish institutions to hold public officeholders responsible for their actions.

Furthermore, the politician pointed to how successful nations have put in place a system to fit their respective culture. Cole narrated how Arab countries and China rejected Western political ideas.

Additionally, he indicated that the borrowed system of government from the US and UK is against the true values of African countries. He asserted that most African nations are suffering due to the adoption of democracy but their citizens cannot speak up.

Cole further called on the adoption of a political system that is deeply rooted in Nigerian culture. Likewise, he stated that the country had a native political structure before colonization. He opined that Nigeria must return to embrace the system.

Tonye Cole is a successful businessman who co-founded popular energy firm Sahara Group with more than 4,000 employees across 38 countries. The billionaire stepped down from his role as the Group Executive Director of Sahara Group in 2018 to pursue a career in politics.

On two occasions, the businessman has clinched the ticket of APC to contest the gubernatorial election in Rivers State. In 2023, he lost to now-suspended Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara by 95,274 to 302,614.
