The African Union (AU) has applauded the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for its exemplary role in international peacekeeping operations, particularly in Somalia, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a key contributor to regional security and stability.

According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the commendation came on Thursday during a high-level diplomatic visit by Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Adeoye, accompanied by Mr. Samuel Victor Makwe from Nigeria’s Embassy in Addis Ababa and other AU officials praised the Nigeria Police for its professionalism, commitment, and competence in its international deployments.

In addition, he cited the Force’s performance in Somalia as “distinguished” and “pivotal” in fostering peace in the Horn of Africa.

“The AU deeply appreciates the Nigeria Police Force for their remarkable contributions to peacekeeping and for representing the continent with honour and integrity. Their efforts have helped shape a more secure and stable society,” he noted.

However, It also reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s reputation as a reliable partner in African peace and security architecture.

He further called for stronger cooperation between the AU and the NPF in combating transnational crimes, including human trafficking, arms smuggling, and terrorism, noting that these threats transcend borders and require collective regional efforts to address.

The statement said, “He further stated that the AU is grateful for the contributions of the Force, which plays a vital role in fostering peace and security in the region and envisions a better society through the continued efforts of the NPF. The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating transnational crimes, urging the NPF to enhance both local and international mechanisms for effective crime fighting”.

In his response, the police boss expressed gratitude for the AU’s recognition and pledged continued commitment to global peacekeeping and security advancement. He reassured the delegation that the NPF would enhance its capacity for international collaborations, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by officers deployed abroad.

“The Nigeria Police remains dedicated to the shared vision of a peaceful and secure Africa. We are taking strategic steps to improve welfare and operational effectiveness, especially for our men and women serving in volatile regions like Somalia,” Egbetokun stated.

The statement further read, “This meeting underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing security challenges and highlights the ongoing commitment of the Force to peacekeeping and crime prevention. Both the IGP and the Ambassador expressed optimism for future collaborations that will enhance security and stability across the continent, as the Force remains dedicated towards this goal.”
