Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi state has commissioned a committee to look into the farmer and herder tension in the state. The development surfaced on Saturday as the governor inaugurated the delegation at the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Speaking at the event, Bala Mohammed represented by his Principal Private Secretary, Hashimu Yakubu narrated how the state and other regions of the country are battling farmers’ and herders’ crises. The unrest, according to the governor, has claimed many lives and properties belonging to innocent victims.

He went on to emphasize that the commissioning of the committee is targeted at keeping the crisis at bay before it escalates to a more serious issue. Bala Mohammed charged the committee to monitor the activities of herdsmen and their livestock to dissuade conflicts.

Furthermore, the group will educate farmers and herders alike on the need to work together toward ensuring food security. Also, the group will serve as an intermediary to resolve emerging conflicts between farmers and herders.

The governor further empowers the committee to access and determine compensation in every farmer and herder dispute. However, Bala Mohammed urged the delegation to ensure their operations remain within the legal framework of Nigeria.

Additionally, the governor of Bauchi state beseeched the committee members to deploy their quality experience while discharging their duties. More so, the governor appointed the Commissioner of the Ministry for Livestock Development, Bala Lukshi as the chairman of the committee.

In his acceptance speech, the commissioner thanked the governor for considering members of the committee worthy to serve in such a crucial group. While promising to discharge their duties, Bala Luski urged stakeholders in the state to support dialogue for peaceful coexistence.

Similarly, he pointed out how religious leaders, security operatives, farmers, and herders must work together to make the state peaceful. It is worth mentioning that the committee includes Muhammad Bura Harsanu as Secretary.

Others include Harsanu Muhammad Tukur, Dr. Aisha Balarabe, Alhaji Yakubu Jibrin, Barrister Hussaini Saraki, Engineer Yohana Barau, Amina Garba Aliyu, Hajiya Rashida Yusuf, and Fatima Adamu.
