The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the release of the three students who were abducted from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
This was revealed by the Nigerian Television Authority on its official X handle on Thursday.
A report from Afrocover stated that the female students of the engineering department were abducted on the university campus while returning from night reading on 25 February.
According to eyewitnesses, armed kidnappers stormed out of a nearby bush and kidnapped the students.
Following the incident, the university management issued an internal memo, condemning the incident and promising that the appropriate authorities had been notified.
While the school’s management confirmed that three students were abducted, the students maintained that four students were abducted.
The memo signed by the Registrar, Dr John David, titled “Security Situation on Campus” ordered a one-week mid-semester break for all students to adequately address the security challenges on campus.
Reacting to the incident, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to intervene in the situation.
The NANS National Public Relations Officer, Samson Adeyemi, said this in a statement disseminated to newsmen on Thursday. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the audacity of the abductors to carry out the act on the university campus.
Adeyemi described the act as barbaric and a dent in the security architecture of the country, imploring the police to immediately deploy resources to rescue the abducted students.
As of the time of this report, details of their release have not been disclosed to the public.
