Black students in Philadelphia have set up a fundraising campaign to bury the 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver shot and killed in Philadelphia.
The yet-to-be-arrested suspects reportedly shot Olatunji Bolaji while he was picking up a passenger outside Byblos Hookah Bar in the early hours of Wednesday, 15 April 2025.
According to reports, two men exited a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee and opened fire, catching Olatunji Bolaji in the middle of the conflict. Unfortunately, the bullet struck him in the head and he could only drive a short distance before crashing out at Chestnut Street.
Responding to the tragedy, the President of the Black Students Chapter in Philadelphia, Alex Morris set up a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support to the deceased’s family. So far, the BSU has only raised $1,712 from 19 donations toward the $25,000 goal.
Morris explained that the BSC had been a friend of Bolaji’s family and would be rendering support to his widow, Charice Bolaji, and their children.
Additionally, the BSC president clarified that the fundraising goal aims to cover the immediate needs of the deceased’s family. This includes $12,000 for funeral and memorial services, $5,000 to help cover living expenses during the grieving period, and $3,000 for counseling support for the family. He added that any amount left from the donations would fund a trust for Olatunji’s grandchildren.
Besides, Morris noted that the BSC will deposit the money raised from the GoFundMe directly into Charice’s bank account. However, if she’s unable to receive the funds directly, the president pledged to personally deliver the donations, ensuring full transparency and providing receipts.
Further, the GoFundMe statement appealed to the public to continue donating, share the campaign, and keep the family in their prayers.
