EFCC re-arrests Kano tiktok influencer for alleged Naira abuse

Operatives of the Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have re-arrested popular TikTok influencer, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, over alleged abuse and mutilation of the Naira.

Kunya, known for her social media presence, was apprehended on Sunday, March 16, 2025, following weeks of surveillance and investigation.

This was contained in a statement released by the antigraft agency on their X official website on Monday that her arrest stemmed from allegations that she sprayed Naira notes for fun during her stay at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano.

The act contravenes the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse, spraying, stamping, or mutilation of the country’s currency.

The influencer was initially arrested in January 2025 for similar offenses and granted administrative bail pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano.

“Specifically,  Kunya was arrested for allegedly  spraying  Naira notes for fun during her stay in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano. The arrest followed her diligent pursuit by EFCC operatives after she jumped an  administrative bail  granted her by the Commission  over one month ago”, the statement said.

However, when the time came for her court appearance, she absconded, prompting EFCC operatives to intensify efforts to track her down.

According to the EFCC statement, following her re-arrest, Kunya was taken into EFCC custody in Kano, where she is currently being held pending her formal arraignment before the court.

Meanwhile, responding to the arrest, the EFCC reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the Nigerian currency. The Commission warned the public against actions that degrade the Naira, including spraying, stamping, or mutilation, particularly during social events.

The statement partly read: “She was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN,  Act which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the Naira. She was granted  an administrative bail by the Commission pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano. However, when it was time for her court appearance, Kunya absconded, evading the legal processes

“However,  after weeks of intensive investigation and surveillance, EFCC operatives successfully re-arrested the TikTok Influencer  on Sunday March 16, 2025. She was subsequently conveyed to the Kano Zonal Directorate of the Commission, where she is currently in custody awaiting her arraignment.”
