Not less than 17 soldiers were killed and 10 others injured while fighting off attacks in Kaduna and Niger states. The military operating base and communities in the states were attacked by armed militants causing huge casualties.

In response, joint military forces engaged and killed some of the bandits in different counter-offensives during the attack. However, some of the military personnel were reportedly killed during the confrontation with the bandits.

According to the Nigerian army on Wednesday, four soldiers also sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment.

Reports say dozens of fortified military bases have been attacked with insurgent killings, since the start of the year. Recently, bases in some areas of Borno state were attacked, leaving at least four soldiers dead.

A few days ago in the same state, bandits attacked a military base with lots of casualties with some troops unaccounted for. Following this, former military generals called for urgent reorganization of the country’s security to stop the terrorist attacks.

Military officers emphasize surveillance and modern technology to combat insecurity

The retired officers attributed the continuous attacks to a lack of cooperation by the citizens and a breach of intelligence protocols. George Edmin, a retired officer, disclosed that support from citizens to the bandits makes the attacks on military bases possible.

He continued that Nigerians are not patriotic as some have decided to serve as the enemy of the state therefore urged Nigerians to cooperate with the military to fight against insecurity and terrorism in the country.

The retired officer also noted that strong intelligence and surveillance are also needed to address the issue of insecurity. He expressed that strong surveillance is a core part of military operations and is needed to fight terrorism.

Another security expert in Niger state, Abdullahi Jabi blamed the recent attacks on the government for lack of necessary resources. Jabi disclosed that the Nigerian army should have fighter jets, and drones among others to fight terrorists and insecurity.

He concluded that the Nigerian leadership is wicked for not having the country’s interest at heart.
