A faction of the Labour Party (LP) in Anambra has conducted a primary election for the upcoming governorship election in the state. Jude Umenajiego, a member of the State Assembly representing Onitsha South Two constituency emerged as a factional candidate of the party.
According to report, Umenajiego recorded 180 votes to defeat his rival, John Nwosu, who had 69 votes in the election. Thereafter, he announced a member of the assembly representing Akwa South 1, Henry Mabchu as his running mate.
The primary election results held in Akwa on Thursday were announced by the acting chairman of the electoral committee, Sunday Okereke. Okereke declared Umenajiego as the elected candidate representing the party for the state governorship election on November 8, 2025.
The winner, Umejiego in his acceptance speech, vowed to work hard for the victory and development of the party. He added that Anambra will be used as an example of turning the country into a productive and developed country. Umejiego reiterated that he is the validly elected governorship candidate, emphasizing that there is no alternative.
However, the election has confused the party following last weekend’s primary election conducted in the party. According to report, another aspirant, Dr George Moghalu had already been elected as the governorship candidate for the Labour Party.
Moghalu reportedly won the Labour Party primary election after his opponent, John Nwosu, withdrew from the contest. Reacting to Thursday’s election, Moghalu noted the election is a peak level of lawlessness and absolute disregard for order. He noted that some crowds were paid by the enemies of the party to confuse the party.
Moghalu added that he has been given a certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission. (INEC). He continued that he has also been given the nomination clearance papers by the electoral body, while other paperwork is ongoing.
Similarly, the public relations Officer of the body, Ugoma Lechukwu, was contacted and asked about the recent primary election conducted. Ugoma described the election as untrue, noting that the commission is not aware of any fresh LP primary election.
