The Federal Government has formed a committee to implement significant reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This comes amid Nigerian concerns about the safety of the corp members, poor facilities and its relevance in this modern era.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during the inauguration of the committee. According to him, the goal is to make the theme stronger, more useful to national growth, and to suit nigerian needs.
Olawande stated that the NYSC has played a significant role in building national unity and assisting youth since 1973. He added that the committee will look into how the program works and suggest ways to make it safer and impactful.
The Minister continued that the outcome of the board will align with national development objectives and national cohesiveness. Also, the panel will come up with plans to fund NYSC and submit the final report to the minister.
Olawande expressed that the committee will review the policy of the program and speak to nigerians for development suggestions. Similarly, the Minister for Education, Tunji Alausa revealed government plan to start a teacher’s corp and medical corps.
Alausa disclosed at the event that these will be for NCE graduates and healthcare workers ready to serve in rural areas. The education minister explained that the new program will close educational gaps and enhance healthcare in rural areas.
He added that this will create employment opportunities and address critical issues such as maternal and child health. Also, the special adviser to the president on policy and coordination, Hadiza Usman emphasized the need to improve the program.
According to her, the technical and vocational skills obtained will empower youths to make meaningful contributions to the nation and their communities.
