The Federal Government is set to launch a National Veteran Security Initiative to formally integrate retired military officers into strategic roles, including intelligence gathering, advisory support, and community conflict resolution.
The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, made this known at the 50th Anniversary of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) 18 Regular Course Alumni, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess, Abuja.
“You are not just heroes of our past, you are strategic partners for today and tomorrow. Nigeria still needs your leadership, wisdom, and experience,” Ribadu said.
The Adviser described the retired officers as vital assets to national stability and urged them to return to active roles in national security.

While acknowledging significant strides made under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Ribadu noted that the fight against insecurity is ongoing.
He revealed that since May 2023, security forces have rescued over 11,250 hostages from criminal groups, while more than 124,000 terrorists and their family members have surrendered to Nigerian troops.
He added that military operations have led to the elimination of 13,543 terrorists, with 11,118 weapons and over 252,000 rounds of ammunition recovered.
In the Northwest, notorious bandit leaders such as Ali Kachalla, Boderi, and Halilu Sububu have been neutralized, alongside more than 50 warlords and 70 of their deputies. In Kaduna, over 35 insurgents have surrendered under the government’s non-kinetic peace initiative.
The NSA also outlined notable progress in other regions. In the Niger Delta, oil production rose from one million to 1.8 million barrels per day following the dismantling of nearly 2,000 illegal refineries and the recovery of stolen petroleum products valued at over ₦3.5 billion.
In the Southeast, separatist violence has waned significantly, with police stations being rebuilt and sit-at-home orders losing their grip.
Ribadu further disclosed that several cybercrime networks funding terrorism and banditry have been dismantled, effectively cutting off millions of illicit funds.
