A senior lawyer in Kenya, Matthew  Mbobu, has been shot dead in a drive-by shooting in the country’s capital, Nairobi.  According to witnesses, the respected lawyer was killed on Tuesday evening when a gunman pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire.

Reacting to this, the Law Society of Kenya has described the killing as obnoxious and abhorrent. Thereafter, the society calls for a swift investigation and a conclusive report of the tragic incident.

It expressed dissatisfaction over threats faced by lawyers, adding that the killing had “all markings of a predetermined assassination. The umbrella body continued in its statement that advocates have often been victimised and targeted for their work

A video shared online, a gruesome video, shows the lawyer’s car, shattered with blood, and his lifeless body slouched over the steering wheel. Also, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said the killing of the lawyer had left them all devastated and in deep shock.

Kingi reflected on a personal connection with the late lawyer, emphasising his influence as a mentor and legal scholar. He penned a heartfelt tribute honouring the lawyer’s legacy in public service and law, urging swift investigations into the tragic incident.

Before this, a member of the country’s parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, was shot dead in April in similar circumstances. Meanwhile, the Police revealed that several suspects had been arrested following what appeared to be a “targeted and predetermined” assassination.

However, the motive for the attack, which resembles the shocking killing of a lawmaker earlier this year, is currently unknown. Following this, Kenyans expressed fury over the rising violence linked to motorbike attacks, prompting urgent calls for justice and accountability.
