The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, has reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) dedication to upholding press freedom and ensuring the protection of the civic space in a democratic society.

He made this assertion during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

The visit, according to a statement made available by the Force Public relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the role of collaboration between the Police Force and the media, provided a platform for discussions on strengthening press freedom and combating the spread of misinformation and disinformation in the country.

During the meeting, Mallam Ndace commended IGP Egbetokun for his leadership and the proactive measures taken by the Force since his assumption of office.

The Director General also acknowledged the critical role of the police in maintaining law and order while emphasizing the need for accurate information dissemination to foster public trust.

According to the VON DG, misinformation and disinformation pose significant threats to public perception of law enforcement agencies and national stability. He assured the IGP of VON’s support in using its platform to promote transparency and enhance the image of the police.

However, In his response, IGP Egbetokun expressed gratitude for the recognition and reiterated the Police Force’s dedication to ensuring public safety with professionalism and integrity. He welcomed VON’s commitment to assisting in countering false narratives that could undermine the credibility of the NPF.

The police chief reaffirmed his stance on fostering a healthy relationship between the Force and the media, emphasizing that an open civic space and press freedom are crucial in a democratic system.

He further assured that the police would remain accountable and receptive to constructive feedback from the public.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to continuous improvement in its service delivery to the Nigerian people. We remain open to partnerships that will help in dispelling fake news and ensuring accurate reportage of security matters,” the IGP stated.
