The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a warning to police officers nationwide against human rights violations and unprofessional conduct.
The warning came during a virtual meeting held on Monday, with senior strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized the importance of upholding the rights of citizens and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.
He noted further that the Force has received numerous complaints regarding human rights abuses and misconduct, assuring that any officer found guilty of such offenses would face severe consequences.
As part of efforts to enforce discipline, the IGP also cautioned all tactical squads against improper dressing and the misuse of power. He reiterated that no operative should be seen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian clothing (mufti), stressing that officers must always wear their assigned uniforms while on duty.
Additionally, the IGP condemned the unauthorized transfer of cases without his written approval, describing the practice as a major contributor to delays in the justice system. He warned that such actions would no longer be tolerated, as they often place undue burdens on affected individuals.
However, the IGP urged all officers, regardless of rank, to work together in upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force, warning that any act capable of tarnishing the institution’s image would be met with appropriate sanctions.
