18 people narrowly escaped death following the collision of a commercial vehicle into a crowd in Jigawa state. The commercial vehicle conveys all Progressive Congress (APC) supporters, welcoming the state governor, Umar Namadi.

Reports say the victims are among residents who had gathered along the roadside in Ringin, a local government area in Jigawa. Eyewitnesses clarified that the vehicle (Volkswagen Golf) lost control and veered off the road before ramming into the crowd.

The eyewitness disclosed that at present, the victims have not yet been identified at the scene of the incident. Meanwhile, the harmed individuals have been evacuated and taken to the hospital by the Federal Road Safety Corps. (FRSC).

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the state PRO of Nigeria security and civil defense (NSCDC), Barudden Tijani, shared that no deaths were recorded. He commended the prompt effort of NSCDC and FRSC for ensuring that the victims receive immediate medical attention.

According to him, the driver, who was speeding, was trying to avoid potholes before crashing. Barudden Tijani continued that the 18 passengers affected sustained varying degrees of injuries from the accident.

In the meantime, he reassured residents of a thorough investigation into the incident to determine its cause and prevent similar incidents. The NSCDC spokesperson advises drivers to be cautious while driving to avoid such accidents in the future.

According to reports, the supporters were preparing for the programme organised by the state government called “citizens and government engagement programme”. The programme is aimed at bringing the governor’s administration closer to the people of the state.

This accident comes less than four months after a similar crash during the fourth edition of the same programme.
