All Progressive Congress (APC) lawmakers in Lagos have dismissed claims that 25 lawmakers are planning to defect from the party. The Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Information and Strategy, Ogundipe Olukayode made the disclosure on Tuesday.
Olukayode stated that APC lawmakers in the assembly are not thinking about defection, noting that challenges faced are resolved through democratic means. He noted that the report of 25 lawmakers defecting to an unnamed party is entirely false and without merit.
The chairman emphasized that a similar report surfaced during a recent leadership dispute within the assembly which is also false. According to him, all party members remain committed, downplaying rumors to depart for LP.
Similarly, the high-ranking executive assured that the party will sort out any internal disagreements through lawful means.
Olukayode thereafter urged those spreading the false claims to stop misleading the public, as the assembly remains focused on its duties. According to report, the Lagos State House of Assembly recently experienced important leadership changes and internal disagreements.
Increasing tension in Lagos APC over speakership seat
Recall that in January, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa suffered an impeachment over claims of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Afrocover reported that following the removal of Obasa, Mojisola Meranda emerged as the first female speaker of the Lagos state House of Assembly.
Meranda, the first female speaker of the assembly, later resigned from her position as Obasa made a return on March 3, 2025. However, The feud between Meranda and Obasa intensified through the controversy surrounding N5 billion vehicles purchased at the Assembly.
According to reports, Meranda purchased about 39 vehicles for the lawmakers during Obasa’s absence as speaker. However, the report says that Obasa had approved N7 billion for the same project last year before his removal.
However, Obasa didn’t let the crisis go down as Meranda and the Assembly faced a legal battle with the speaker. His contention in court is still ongoing despite the political intervention of party stakeholders who resolved the leadership crisis.
Meanwhile, Justice Yetunde of Lagos State High Court adjourned the hearing of the suit filed by the speaker to March 17, 2025.
