The Lagos State Government has reminded motorists that engaging in activities such as smoking, drinking, or eating while driving constitutes a traffic offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

The warning, issued via the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Wednesday, cautioned road users against distractions that could endanger lives and public safety.

According to the agency, the law clearly prohibits any act that could divert a driver’s attention from the road, with smoking, drinking, and eating specifically listed among such acts.

The agency noted further that more than the traffic violation, offenders also risk penalties. These include the impoundment of their vehicles, three months of imprisonment, or a six-month sentence of community service as prescribed by the law.

“Additional Penalty: Impound vehicle/
Three (3) Months imprisonment or six
(6) monthly community service,” the statement said.

While highlighting the consequences, LASTMA called on drivers to adopt safer habits and avoid endangering lives through careless behavior behind the wheel.

“This is a serious offence. Every driver must be alert and focused while driving. Distractions like smoking, drinking or eating not only put the driver at risk but also other road users,” the agency said.

The Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law was enacted to enhance discipline, order, and safety on Lagos roads, and agencies such as LASTMA have intensified enforcement in recent years to reduce accidents linked to negligence and distractions.
