An explosion that occurred in Lagos on Thursday has claimed the life of an unidentified scavenger while leaving three others hospitalized.

The incident reportedly occurred after a military-grade grenade exploded at Idi-Araba in the Mushin area of Lagos state.

Reports indicate that some scavengers at a metal scrap yard were trying to dismantle a grenade they had found. Unfortunately, the grenade exploded during the process, resulting in one person being killed instantly and three others suffering serious injuries.

Meanwhile, a resident, Akin Olawale told newsmen the explosion was suddenly heard on Thursday afternoon, resulting in panic among residents. According to him, the cause of the incident was discovered only after the police arrived at the scene.

Additionally, security operatives reportedly found two undetonated grenades at the spot.

Furthermore, another resident who insisted on anonymity claimed to have seen a vehicle carrying some injured persons to the hospital in a rush.

While responding, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the explosion and its cause. He explained that the military-grade grenade exploded at about 1:30pm.

Hundeyin noted that the police command had already sealed off the place where the incident occurred. Additionally, the command’s Explosive and Ordinance Department has rendered the place safe.

The PPRO further noted that investigation has commenced while assuring that such an incident would never occur again.
