The Lagos State Government has shut down 13 markets in the state over repeated improper waste management. The closed markets are located in Ketu and Mile 12 areas of the state.
The state commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab revealed this in a post on his official X page on Friday.
The commissioner explained that the Lagos State Government sealed off the markets for persistent violations of the state’s management law. This included illegal waste disposal on roads, medians, and highways.
Wahab noted that these activities are contrary to the state’s Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. He disclosed that the sealing which occurred on Thursday night, is in line with the government’s commitment to environmental sanity.
Additionally, the commissioner stressed that the actions are crucial in safeguarding public health and restoring order in the state. He further emphasized the need for market stakeholders to take responsibility for proper waste management henceforth.
Wahab went on to provide a list of the 13 markets the state government sealed off during the environmental sanity exercise. They included Erukan Market, Mile 12; Oja Oba Market, Ketu; Owoseni Tundas Market; Oba Ogunjobi Market, Mile 12.
In addition, Shops Owners ( Brt Terminal), Mile 12; Mile 12 Bus Stop Shops; Ketu Terminal Market (6 plazas); Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market, Mile 12 were shut down. The Demurin St Plaza Shops, Ketu The Occupant, 6 Demurin Road, Ketu; Ifelodun market, Ketu were not left out.
Other affected markets are Ibadan Unit 1 park (in between Babajide Sanwo-Olu Market and Ikosi Fruit Market); and Ketu Tipper Garage.
Lastly, the commissioner urged every resident to collaborate with the government to create a more hygienic and safer state.
